Charles “Chuck” R. Smith

Charles “Chuck” R. Smith, age 79, of Staunton, IL, passed away on Sunday, April 12, 2026, at Cedarhurst Senior Living in Bethalto, IL.

Chuck was born on February 17, 1947, in Villa Grove, IL, the son of the late Evan D. and Mabel J. (Anderson) Smith. He later married Jean (Helms) Smith on June 17, 2005, in Troy, IL, and they shared over 20 years of marriage together.

Chuck’s children from his first marriage survive him: Eric Smith and his wife Emily of Alhambra, IL; Arianna Green and her husband Chris of Hamel, IL; and Sarah Smith-Raschen and her husband Mike of Edwardsville, IL. He was a proud grandfather to ten grandchildren: Isabella Smith, Isaac Smith, Elias Raschen, Lillyann Smith, Elleanna Green, Ezekiel Raschen, Brielle Green, Ezra Raschen, Sophia Green, and Vincent Green.

Chuck was a proud and dedicated lineman, spending 60 years in the trade as a member of the IBEW. He took great pride in his work and in providing for his family, forming lasting friendships along the way.

He is also survived by his siblings: Sue McComas of Allerton, IL; Jim Smith and his wife Cathy of Kingsford, MI; and Steve Smith.

In addition to his parents, Chuck was preceded in death by his siblings, Donald “Rocket” Smith, Betty Crawford, and Melissa “Mick” Luth.

Chuck was an avid trap shooter and could often be found at the Edwardsville Gun Club, enjoying time with friends and doing what he loved.

Chuck will be remembered for his strong work ethic and the pride he took in his work and in his family. He cared deeply for his children and grandchildren and was a hard-working man. His memory will live on in the lives of those he loved.

In accordance with his wishes, Chuck was cremated and will be interred at Villa Grove Cemetery in Villa Grove, IL.  A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 23, 2026, at the Edwardsville Moose Lodge from 1:00 pm until 5:00 pm.

Memorials may be made to The National Sisterhood United for Journeyman Lineman to support families of fallen or injured lineman.
