William Brown Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our brother William Michael (Mike) Brown, age 75 on July 16, 2024 in Maryville, IL.

Originally from Edwardsville, the family moved to Denver Colorado where Mike graduated from High School and began his University studies. While in Denver, Mike entered into the equestrian show-jumping world winning numerous awards, including the prestigious Sportsmanship of the Year.

Mike then joined the family as they moved to Costa Rica so his father, a mining engineer, could manage mining operations in the mountains. Mike became assistant editor of The Tico Times newspaper, which at the time was the only English language newspaper. Mike always enjoyed helping his family, friends, and others and this newspaper allowed him to help Americans learn about the country and its much slower pace - “Tico Time”. While at the newspaper he had a unique opportunity to meet with many interesting people from the Costa Rican Presidents, to Ambassadors from various countries, to conservation researchers and scientists.

Over a decade later Mike returned to his Edwardsville hometown where he finished his University studies. Then, true to his helping character, became a Social Worker for the Illinois Department of Human Services in East Alton, Illinois retiring in 2016.

He had a great love for animals and was a staunch supporter of cruelty prevention programs. He had a special bond with his beloved German Sheppard dog Carrie and his thoroughbred hunter Witchcraft and her foal.

Mike is survived by two sisters, Emily Sue Brown (Newburg, MO), and Rebecca Ellen Hattersley (Brown), (Avalon, WI), two brothers-in-law John Johnson and Arthur Hattersley.

He is preceded in death by his mother and father Julia Ann Williams (Brown) and William Bailey Brown Jr, and brother Steven Jeffery Brown.

Mike was always thinking and helping others. The memory of his steady hand, quiet demeanor, and low voice will remain forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

Instead of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or plant a tree in memory of William Michael (Mike) Brown.
