Susan Lynn Obituary

Susan Elaine Lynn, age 80, of Edwardsville, Illinois, died at St. Louis University Hospital on May 6, 2025, surrounded by her loved ones. She was born on May 15, 1944, in Memphis, Tennessee, to James and Sue Young.

Susan was a southern girl; in her high school yearbook, her El Dorado High School friends warned her not to become a “yankee” at the University of Missouri. There, she met the love of her life, Terry Lynn, whom she married on September 4, 1965. Her friends would be glad to know she never lost her slight twang.

Throughout 60 years of marriage, she and Terry raised three children: Stacey, Amy and Adam. They were active, loving parents coaching their kids’ teams and taking an active and supportive role in their many activities. Susan never missed a game, loving every moment of Stacey and Amy’s field hockey games and Adam’s many baseball and basketball games at Edwardsville High School. She was a kind and reliable Girl Scout Leader and “Room Mother” for all three of her kids’ classes.

Through her husband and children, Susan immersed herself in and fell in love with the Edwardsville community. Eventually, she and Terry owned and operated the Gym Bag. At “the Bag,” Susan’s clever artistry was on full display. Customers marveled at her hand-sewn, intricately-designed, custom-made sweatshirts, and she loved creating uniforms for countless teams. But there was one story about a young boy who couldn’t afford shoes. She provided them for free–no questions asked. She kept the hand-written thank you note from the boy and would occasionally let friends read it.

Her family will miss her delicious southern-style meals. Her dinner rolls, a fourth-generation recipe, New Year’s Day ribs, “coke salad,” peach cobbler, were the much-loved comfort food for her family for decades.

Susan was passionate about music; she loved all genres, country, the blues, and rock and roll. She once saw Elvis as a little girl when he played at her high school's football stadium before he became famous.

She loved to travel and take pictures. Her home on Jefferson is filled with various photos from the National Parks she visited, and she listened to or watched every St. Louis Cardinals game, even though her all-time favorite player (other than Adam) was Cleveland Indian Rocky Colavito.

Along with family and community, two other things were close to her heart: gardening and pets. Susan had a tender heart for all animals, and the family always had a cat or dog or two, and those lucky animals received royal pampering. The winner of multiple Green Thumb Awards, Susan’s gardens and lawn are the results of meticulous care. Surrounded by the traditional white picket fence, every inch of those gardens represents a master class in planning and care. If you’ve seen that house, you know what I mean.

She is survived by her beloved husband of nearly 60 years, Terry; her children: Stacey Lipe (husband Dave), Amy Cassidy (husband Kevin), and Adam Lynn (wife Tina); and her cherished grandchildren: Emma Lipe, Seth Lipe, Meghan Cassidy, and Cooper Cassidy. Also surviving are her brother Pete Young, brother-in-law Rick Lynn, and nieces and nephews Erin and Brody Lynn, and Chrissy Young.

Susan is missed, but her legacy endures in her large family and many friends, their loving memories, the clothing she created, her garden, and her dog, Reba.

A celebration will be held to honor Susan’s life; those plans will be announced at a later date. Meanwhile, she wouldn’t want us to be sad. Instead, the family is encouraging everyone to plant something, be kind to someone, or go visit someplace beautiful in her honor.   Condolences may be expressed online at weberfuneralhome.com.
