Rev. Elaine E. Smith

Rev. Elaine E. Smith, age 84, formerly of Edwardsville, IL, passed away on Thursday, November 28, 2024, at St. Lukes Hospital, in Chesterfield, MO.  Elaine was born in Marion, IL, on May 27, 1940, the daughter of the late David W. & Beaulah (Thacker) Elliott.  Elaine married Dr. Robert R. Smith on July 14, 1958, and was happily married for 62 years until Robert preceded Elaine in death on January 24, 2021.  Elaine is survived by two sons, Gary Smith of Evendale, OH, Larry Smith & wife Carol, of St. Charles, MO; a daughter, Elise Rebmann & husband Patrick of Columbia, MO; four grandchildren, Laura Verstreater & husband Jay, Fenton, MO, Steven Smith & wife Melissa, of Seattle, WA, Severine Rebmann, of Chicago, IL, and Atticus Rebmann, of Columbia, MO; three great grandchildren, Audrey, Raya, and Aliyah Verstreater; and two sisters, Geraldine McClary, of Lakeland, FL, and Susie Haralson, of Orlando, FL.  Elaine was a retired United Methodist minister. Elaine served several churches over the years in the Metro East and Southern Illinois communities.  She ministered at Hartford, South Roxana, Centralia 1st UMC & Irvington, and finally Edwardsville Immanuel UMC where she retired in 2006.  Prior to joining the ministry she was a grade-school teacher in Millstadt, IL and a remedial reading teacher in Carbondale, IL.   Elaine was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church in Edwardsville.  She loved music, traveling, and birdwatching.  A memorial service will be held on Monday, December 16, 2024, at St. John’s United Methodist Church at 2:00 pm with Rev. Grant Armstrong presiding.  A Celebration of Life will immediately follow at the church celebrating both the lives of Elaine and her husband Robert until 4:00 pm.  The family suggest memorials to St. John’s United Methodist Church Condolences may be expressed online at weberfuneralhome.com.
