Nicholas “Nick” Anton Ladd, age 93, passed away on Friday, October 18, 2024, at Anderson Hospital in Maryville, IL. Nick was born September 12, 1931, to Nicholas F. Ladd and Mary F. Ladd (Ballweg) in Edwardsville, IL. The oldest of 10 children, Nick had seven brothers and two sisters.
He graduated from St. Louis University with a Math Degree. Nick was drafted into the U.S. Army near the end of the Korean War and served from June 1953 – May 1955. He was stationed at Andrews AFB in Washington, DC and Ft. Bliss, Texas as a radar mechanic. After he was discharged, he moved to North Carolina for work and lived there for several years before returning home to continue his education, graduating from St. Louis College of Pharmacy.
He married Elizabeth “Betty” Anne Bridgewater on August 1, 1964, at St. Boniface Church in Edwardsville. They built a home in Edwardsville and had three girls, Anne, Ellen and Amy, and were married for 26 years until Betty passed away in 1990. Nick never remarried – “Betty was the one for me.”
Nick was a pharmacist for nearly 50 years, working at Ballweg’s Drug Store in Edwardsville, then Glen Carbon, Schwartz Drug Store in Edwardsville, Medicare Glaser in Glen Carbon, Rinderer’s in Bethalto and part-time at Beltline Family Pharmacy in Alton until he retired at 79.
Nick’s family was the most important thing to him, and he was happiest when he got to spend time with all his girls, then his grandkids. He enjoyed traveling and loved to read and watch sports. He was a devout Catholic and belonged to St. Boniface Church in Edwardsville.
Nick is survived by his children Anne Vickers (Gary), Ellen Viehmann (Steve) and Amy Barge (Bill), his grandchildren Taylor Vickers, Alex Barge, Kendall Vickers, Colin Barge and Jeremy Vickers, and siblings Gary Ladd, Tom Ladd, Don Ladd, Dolores “Dodie” Levi and Mark Ladd. Nick was preceded in death by his parents Nicholas and Mary Ladd and siblings Richard Ladd, Mary Lou Ladd, Mike Ladd, and Jim Ladd.
A memorial visitation will take place on Thursday, October 24, 2024, at Weber & Rodney Funeral Home in Edwardsville from 4 pm until 7 pm. A Funeral Mass will take place at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Edwardsville on Friday, October 25, at 10:30 am with Fr. Christopher Trummer officiating. Interment will be at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Glen Carbon, IL. Memorials may be given to St. Boniface School/Church or Eden Village Retirement Community.
