Mary Cullen Obituary

Mary K. Cullen, 94, of Edwardsville, IL, passed on Friday, November 28, 2025. She was born January 26, 1931, in Springfield, IL, the daughter of the late John and Kathryn (Mallon) Melvin. After attending Collinsville High School, Mary K. went on to graduate from Jewish Hospital School of Nurses in 1952. On July 23, 1955, she married Jerome V. Cullen and remained by his side until his passing in 2016. They had six children. Being a mother became her selfless devotion for her entire life. Her caring, mothering nature carried over well into her nursing career of 42 years, 38 of them at St. Joseph in Highland, Il where she became the ER supervising nurse. With Mary K’s long life came the painful losses of two of her children, Kathryn A. Beerman and Jerry V. Cullen, as well as two beloved grandchildren, Christopher Ivey and Carrie Cullen. Also preceded in death by her siblings, brother John Melvin, and sisters Jean Ann Berg-Simhauser and Carol Sue Melvin. She is survived by three sons, Kevin J. Cullen (Jeanne), of Florida, Keith M. Cullen (Gail) and John M. Cullen (Erin), of Edwardsville, IL;  daughter, Patricia S. Ivey (Tim), of Ballwin, MO; eight grandchildren; four great grandchildren; daughter in-law, Jeri Cullen, of Edwardsville, IL; son-in-law, Russell Beermann, and many nieces and nephews. Mary K. was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, Edwardsville, Madison County Association Home, and Kaleidoscope Ladies of the Hat. A funeral Mass will be held on March 10, 2026, at 10:30 am at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Edwardsville, IL, with the Very Rev. Jeffrey Goeckner presiding. Private interment will be at St. Boniface Cemetery in Edwardsville.
