LaVerna “Butch” Shaffer, age 91, of Edwardsville, IL, passed away at 10:38 pm on March 14, 2026, at Eden Village in Glen Carbon, IL.
She was born on May 13, 1934, in Welcome, MN, to Herbert W. Voyles and Mable C. (Hannsgard) Voyles. At the age of 14, she moved to Edwardsville with her father following the passing of her mother. Affectionately nicknamed “Butch” by her father, she carried that name throughout her life among the many lifelong friends she made at and after graduating from Edwardsville High School in 1952.
On June 28, 1953, LaVerna married Donald W. Shaffer. Together they built a loving family and raised two children, Cindy and Stan.
LaVerna was devoted to her family as a homemaker. She also worked for a time in Edwardsville as a secretary for Midwest Title and later the County Soil Conservation Office.
She was a longtime member of Eden Church, where she enjoyed participating in the Prime of Life group. She cherished her visits back to Minnesota to spend time with her beloved siblings. She also found great joy in her friendships, especially through her card clubs and her “widows’ group.”
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Donald Shaffer; her brother, Glen Voyles; her sisters, June Sandberg, Mae Klug, Alice Minick, and Doris Gruver; and her infant brother, Duane, and infant sister, Fern.
LaVerna is survived and will be greatly missed by her daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Dan Highlander; her son and daughter-in-law, Stan and Patty (Filla) Shaffer; four grandchildren and their spouses, Graham and Meg Shaffer, Garret and Kyla Shaffer, Colby Highlander, and Emily and David Johnson; her great-grandchildren, Owen, Frankie, Knox, Jack, and Aftyn; and step-great-grandchildren, Elias and Jude.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Eden Village and Heartland Hospice for their compassionate care and support.
A private service was held on Friday, March 20, at Weber and Rodney Funeral Home. Interment is at Valley View Cemetery in Edwardsville, IL.
Memorial contributions may be made to Eden Village Foundation, 200 S. Station Road, Glen Carbon, IL 62034 or Heartland Hospice, 333 Salem Place, Suite 165, Fairview Heights, IL 62208. Condolences may be shared online at weberfuneralhome.com
