Ken “Wimpy” A. Schlemer, age 66, of Staunton, IL, passed away on Friday, April 4, 2025, at his residence. Wimpy was born November 15, 1958, in Highland, IL, the son of the late James J. & Margaret “Muggs” A. (Elliott) Schlemer. Wimpy married Sara B. Jackson on June 27, 1992, in Negril, Jamaica. Besides his wife of almost 33 years, Wimpy is survived by his two sons, William D. Wheat III & wife Jennifer, of Bunker Hill, IL, and Hunter A. Schlemer & wife Brittany, of Marine, IL; six grandchildren, Dylan Wheat and Alexis Carroll, of Bunker Hill, IL, Colt and Rhett Schlemer, Austin and Brennan Zarzeck of Marine, IL. Wimpy retired from the Edwardsville School District as a head custodian after many years of service. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. He always said if he couldn’t catch it or kill it, he didn’t want to do it. He loved spending time with his family and especially enjoyed playing cars with the grandkids. Wimpy was a gummy bear aficionado and said if he died from eating too many gummy bears, please just say he was killed by a bear. He loved some good fried chicken with a cold soda. As his disease progressed, it was harder for him to do the things he enjoyed, but he was always up for a trip to Bass Pro Shop or Scheels. Of course, he wanted to stop for Waffle House afterwards. And, after every doctor’s appointment, his family took him to Smoothie King for a bowl with extra granola. His family will greatly miss his wonderful sense of humor and unique “words of wisdom”. Wimpy will be cremated according to his wishes and a Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, June 22nd at the Edwardsville Moose Lodge from 2:00 pm – 6:00 pm. The family suggests memorials be sent to Barnes Jewish Hospital or Washington University in St. Louis because of all they did to prolong Wimpy’s life, giving his family more time with him.
