She was born Emma June Kern in East St. Louis, Illinois on  23 June 1936, the daughter of Charles and Dorothy (Slate) Kern. She grew up in East St. Louis, where she attended Saint Elizabeth’s grade school and Saint Theresa’s Academy. After graduation from high school, she was awarded an art scholarship and attended Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, where she met her husband, Duane. They were married in Saint Elizabeth’s Catholic Church in East St. Louis on 15 September 1956, and were happily married for 68 years. She was the illustrator for International Game Warden Magazine for over ten years and created classroom graphics for teachers in the Edwardsville community. Through the years, she was commissioned for numerous paintings, portraits and countless specialty caricatures and cartoons. She loved gardening and playing Scrabble, and loved her pets, especially the family cat, Missy.

Besides her husband of 68 years, June is survived by three sons; Mark of San Antonio, Texas, Ross (Cheryl), of Edwardsville, Karl (Dawn) of Lakewood Colorado, and one daughter, Lindsay, of Edwardsville.
