Born on January 4, 1941, in Nokomis, Illinois, Jim was the son of Frank and Bessie Zupanci. He pursued his education at Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville, where he earned a bachelor's degree in education, a foundation that would support his lifelong commitment to teaching and mentoring young people.
Jim dedicated 34 years of his life to the Edwardsville School District as an educator and coach. Known affectionately by many as simply “Coach,” he left an indelible mark on the community through his passion for athletics and youth development. In 1971, he founded both the Edwardsville Junior High Football program and the Track and Field program. He served as Head Coach of both until his retirement in 1999. His leadership and dedication shaped generations of student-athletes and fostered a spirit of teamwork and perseverance that extended far beyond the playing field.
In addition to his career in education and coaching, James proudly served his country as a Private First Class in the United States Army.
Jim was deeply involved in civic life and numerous organizations that reflected his wide-ranging interests. He was active in the Edwardsville Education Association (EEA), National Education Association (NEA), Illinois Education Association (IEA), Historic Preservation Commission in Edwardsville, Jaycees, Quail Forever, and the Benjamin Stephenson House.
Outside of his professional and civic endeavors, Jim enjoyed a full life pursuing hobbies that brought him joy and connection with others. He was an avid golfer and gardener who also found pleasure in hunting, antiquing, playing bridge, and traveling. These passions reflected his curiosity about the world around him and his appreciation for both nature and history.
