Herbert Von Hoven Obituary

Herbert L. Von Hoven, age 87, of Edwardsville, IL., passed away on Tuesday, December 31, 2024, at Addington Place in Edwardsville. He was born on September 6, 1937, in Louisville, KY. Herb was the son of the late Herbert and Veronica Von Hoven. Herb graduated from the University of Louisville - J. B. Speed School of Engineering and Washington University - College of Architecture. Herb married Carole Bangert on February 15, 1964. Besides his wife of 60 years, Herb is survived by one son, Dr. Eric Von Hoven, and his wife, Sarah of Livingston Manor, NY., a grandson, Dane Von Hoven of Trinidad, CO., and his grandson, 2nd LT. Kellen Von Hoven and his wife Madison of Ft. Liberty (Ft. Bragg) N.C.
Herb was a very creative man who enjoyed solving everyday problems and being a mentor and role model to others in his community. He was the architect of several structures in the area, including the Vadalabene Building on the SIUE campus, the gym and workout room at the YMCA Niebur Center, and the beautiful Fountain in Library Park. Herb remained devoted to his community, receiving an honor for serving on the Plan Commission for 20 years when he stepped down as Chairman. He was on the YMCA board for 12 years and was Chairman from 1986 to 2009. He received the Community Service Award from the Rotary Club International and the Paul Harris Fellowship Award. Herb also served as an elder of the First Presbyterian Church. Additionally, Herb served on the Edwardsville-Glen Carbon Pantry Board and the Faith in Action Board for nine years.
After retirement, Herb and Carole traveled across the United States and Europe, always interested in history and architectural achievement.
Herb will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his spirit lives on in the countless lives he touched. He spent his last few years with his faithful furry friend, Mia, by his side.
Herb has chosen to have his body donated to the Washington University Body Donor Program. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Instead of flowers, please consider donating to First Presbyterian Church, 3601 Ridge View Road, Edwardsville, IL 602025, the Edwardsville YMCA, 7348 Goshen Road, Edwardsville, IL 62025, or the 82nd Airborne Division Association, Inc, PO Box 87482, Fayetteville, NC 28304-7482.  Condolences may be expressed online at weberfuneralhome.com.
