George Henderson of Edwardsville passed away peacefully on February 10, 2025. George was born on August 22, 1940, in Charleston, West Virginia, the son of the late John G. and Louise Kenna Henderson. He graduated from Charleston Catholic High School in 1958 and received his BS, MS and PhD degrees from Georgetown University and did post-doctoral work at Johns Hopkins University. George was Professor Emeritus of Physics at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville where he began teaching in 1970. He taught the full range of Physics courses and helped develop general studies courses in Astronomy and Musical Acoustics. He served on many departmental and university committees and was very active with the Religious Center (now CSS) on campus. He was a consultant to McDonnell-Douglas on behavior of laser systems. George enjoyed singing in a high school quartet, college Glee Club and SIUE Community Chorus. He also liked to travel. He and his wife enjoyed many trips with the Chorus as well as to places on their “bucket list.” George is survived by his wife, Pat, of 61 years and his children Mary Beth (Mary Long) Henderson, John G. Henderson and Joanne (Brian) Keefe. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Center for Spirituality and Sustainability (Fuller Dome) SIUE, 81 Circle Dr, Edwardsville, IL 62026 at 1 pm Sunday, February 23.
