It is with immeasurable sadness that we announce the passing of Douglas Alvern Smith on February 6, 2026, at the age of 67. Doug was born in Granite City, IL, on July 2, 1958, to the late Alvern “Ira" & Arlene Smith. He married Lesa (Jarrard) Smith, also of Granite City, in their hometown on July 12, 1980. Besides his wife of 45 years, Doug is survived by his two daughters, Leann Henderson and Laini Saligram, granddaughter Olivia Henderson, and three siblings, Robin Keeton, Janet Hawkes, and Dennis Smith. In addition to his parents, Doug was preceded in death by his brother, Donald Smith.
Doug worked as a sheet metal journeyman for over 40 years, and was a member of Sheet Metal Workers Local 268. He was a skilled handyman, capable of any home improvement project or repair. He also enjoyed gardening and creating a variety of decorative and functional designs with wood, metal, concrete, and stained glass. Above all else, family was Doug’s top priority. He was ever-present and involved in the lives of not only his wife, children, and grandchild, but extended family as well. He lit up around his loved ones, sharing stories and telling jokes that made everyone, including himself, laugh.
An incredibly selfless man, Doug was always willing to lend a helping hand to those who needed it, and he expected nothing in return. His generosity reached countless individuals throughout his life, and he was loved and admired for his hard-working, reliable, and funny - albeit sometimes grumpy - nature. His absence will be felt by many, and words cannot describe how deeply he will be missed.
A memorial visitation will be held on Sunday, March 8, 2026, at Weber & Rodney Funeral Home in Edwardsville, IL, from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Habitat for Humanity or Glen-Ed Pantry to best honor Doug’s lifetime of service to others. Condolences may be shared online at weberfuneralhome.com.
