Dorothy J. Benson

Dorothy J. Benson, age 95, of Edwardsville, IL died at 4:48 am on Sunday, December 7, 2025, at Anderson Hospital in Maryville, IL. Dorothy was born on May 30, 1930, in Alton, IL, the daughter of the late Earl E. & Coleta (Mindrup) Zimmerman.  Dorothy married on June 18, 1952, to William W. Benson in Chrisman, IL.  He preceded her on death on July 12, 2006.

Dorothy is survived by her two sons, W. Alan Benson & wife Nina, of Jenks, OK, and James Benson & wife Kimberly, of Cheyenne, WY; and two grandchildren, Stephen Benson and Mark Benson.  Besides her parents and husband, Dorothy was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Kathryn Benson.

Dorothy graduated from Edwardsville High School in 1947.  She continued her education at Illinois State University graduating in 1951 and completed her master’s from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville in 1972. She was a teacher at Alton High School from 1960 until 1985, and also adult education until 2005. She was an active member in St. John’s United Methodist Church, Madison County Association for Home & Community Education, Heartland Quilters Guild, and the P.E.O Sisterhood, Chapter ED. 

A visitation will be held on Saturday, December 20, 2025, at Weber & Rodney Funeral Home in Edwardsville from 2:00 pm until 3:00 pm.  A funeral service will follow at 3:00 pm at the funeral home with Rev. Grant Armstrong presiding. A graveside service will be held on Monday, December 22, at Valley View Cemetery at 10:30 am.   The family suggests memorials to Cottey College in Nevada, MO or St. John’s United Methodist Church Building Fund.  Condolences may be shared online at weberfuneralhome.com.
